Captain's Rosebowl

With the 1st leg of the Rosebowl being held at Innellan, we had a good turnout of 34 players with 10 Cowal members gracing Innellan on Sunday..

Again scoring was good with Innellan members coming to the fore, with local knowledge playing a part with the leaders all local members.

Leading the way, continuing with his good form in recent weeks, was Robert Dodds, who again scored well with a 61, one shot ahead of Michael Mallaney and Billy Ferguson, closely followed by Scott Lauffer on 63.

Leading the way for the Cowal boys was Craig McKechnie and Ally MacDonald who both shot 66.

With the scores fairly close, can the Innellan 6 hang on to their lead, or will one of the Cowal boys rise and take the spoils.

Lets hope we have a good turnout again and support The Rosebowl at Cowal and weather holds out.

Good luck to all.

September Medal 2013

As the season starts to draw to a close, the ominous signs are Sunday golf and with the change in competition days, we only had 10 players take part in the September Medal.

Nonetheless scoring was good, and we had 3 players on par or better.

Leading the way with a 62 was Willie McCosh, closely followed by Robert Dodds 1 stroke behind, and another one adrift was Gordon Livingston who also shot the best gross with a 71.

AUGUST MEDAL

Another good turnout for the August medal saw 32 players take part, with the competition being very close again.

With 2 strokes separating 5 players, it was Dougie Cooper, who prevailed on 62, beating Scott Lauffer on countback, closely followed by Russell Lees, Billy Mclaughlin and Gordon Livingston who all scored 64

Best gross of the day was Gordon who scored 71.

ROYAL HOTEL TROPHY

On another pleasant Sunday we had over 40 players take part in "The Royal".

Scoring was good, with a close run thing for both the Gross and nett prizes.

Denis Doherty played well and won the nett on countback from Robin McDougall,
 both scored 63.

The main prize was contended by visitors from Cowal, with Chris Richmond scoring 68 only being shaded by one stroke from Gordon Tyre who scored 67.

Thanks again to all who donated and assisted in the running of the event.

Tuesday 30 July 2013

Vice Captains Prize

If only we had a vice captain!

On a day when we had some mixed weather, with real heavy thunder storms, interspersed with some  lovely warm sunshine, scoring again was very good.

We had 27 players with a few getting caught in the worst of the showers making it very difficult to get round.

Nontheless, of  the players who finished their round we had 4 players under par with Robert Dodds scoring a nett 60, beating Robert Baxter by one and Alex Robertson and Archie Tait by 2.

The heavy rain over the last week has taken the fire out of the course and the greens are running smooth.

On Saturday we had visitors from the Clubgolf programme who had won a fourball at Innellan.,

They heaped praise on the course, the views, and the very friendly staff.

Well done to all involved and lets keep up the good work on keeping our golf club one of the most welcoming in Scotland.

Ex Presidents Cup

Playing for the oldest trophy in  Innellan Golf Club history, we had 30 players on another decent day.

With well manicured greens and running fairways, scoring was very good, with David Mclaughlin coming in with a magnificent 60, beating Gordon Livingston and Richard Lysik by 2 strokes.

With the highest score on the card being a 5, David played very steadily and cruised to his best result this year.

Best gross was Gordon Livingston with 69.

Sunday 21 July 2013

Festival Cup

On another beautiful day and night, we had 27 Gents and 5 ladies take part in The Festival Cup.

Under a different format from  last year there was a separate competition for both sexes.

Of the 6 ladies playing under a stableford comp, Margaret Lauder won with a fantastic 34 points, followed by Irene Hodge on 32 pts.

As for the Gents it was a very close event, with 3 players all tied on 64.

Winning on countback was form man, Dougie Cooper with Phil Mortimer and Mike Clark also on 64.

With the course in excellent condition we had a very good turnout again, for this popular Friday event.

July Stroke

On another glorious July day we had 29 players for the July Stroke.

With greens  faster and harder than ever, and the ball running for miles, the css was 65, with few players scoring below that.

On countback with a score of 62, winner Archie Tait, tied with Richard Lysik, closely followed by Duncan Lauder and Dougie Cooper, only one stroke behind..

Good to see Archie's return to form with  him not playing too many competitions in the last year.

Sunday 14 July 2013

I don't like Mondays

On another glorious day we had 27 grace the turf at Innellan for the Sunday Cup.

With the greens hard and fast, links golf was the order of the day for low scoring.

I overheard someone say, that he had stuck some juicy fruit on his putter on some holes just to keep the ball on the greens.

The course is in excellent condition and the members are enjoying hitting the ball further than
ever, due to this spell of dry weather.

Well onto the players themselves, as the heading states, Boomtown Rat,or is it The Sundance Kid, Andy Collings, wins the Sunday Cup again, for the 3rd time in 4 years. A fantastic achievement indeed.

A nett score of 61, won by 3 strokes from Scott Lauffer on 64, and  Nipper Simpson with a 65 took 3rd.

Best gross of the day with same score  were, Chris Richmond, of Cowal with a 72 and our own Nipper  Simpson.

Lets hope this great weather continues and keeps the numbers up on competition days.

Tuesday 9 July 2013

Western Ferries Stableford

On another beautiful day, 36 players took to the course, to top up their tan and also maybe throw in some golf.

Some great scoring saw Bruce Lauder, burn up the course with a fantastic 41 pts, closely followed by Martin Doherty, 39 pts and form man, Stan Greer on 38 pts..

A very steady round saw Bruce score well  on all holes apart from one and a one over par front nine saw him in good shape for the rest of the round.

6 players played better than their handicap and css was 36 pts.

Tuesday 2 July 2013

JULY MEDAL

33 players took part in the July Medal, and with showery weather scoring was difficult.

Only 2 players beat their handicap with Stan Greer, buoyed by his previous 1st round in the Shaw, beating Mike Clark on countback  with both scoring  nett 63.

Best gross of the day was Denis Doherty with a 71.

Next competition is the Saturday Stroke and after that, is The Western Ferries Trophy, a stableford event.

Club Championship

With gale force winds awaiting 28 sturdy souls, scoring was high with Denis Doherty scoring a very steady 71 on Sunday leading the gross by 4 strokes, from Robert Baxter, and a number of players on 76.

Leading the way in the handicap event were Robert Dodds and Denis Doherty with a nett 65 with Dougie Cooper, trailing by just the one stroke.

A better day on Monday, with less wind saw 30 players compete for the honour of being Innellan Golf Club Champion.

The top 6 in the gross were last 2 groups to go out, and the eventual winner, was the lowest handicap player at the club ,Scott Ferguson.

Scott played well, whilst others not scoring so good, and he  batted round the course in a very good 68, taking the Championship by 3 strokes, from Denis Doherty who scored 76 to miss out by 3.

The Mark Wells Trophy was closely contested too with Dougie Cooper, 132 nett, beating the father and son duo, Billy and Scott Ferguson by 2 strokes and closely followed by evergreen, Billy McLaughlin who also scored 134.

Thanks again to all took part and endured the high winds on Sunday and the efforts of all the greens staff ,who presented the course in magnificent condition and house staff who provided valuable food and drink when required.

Monday 24 June 2013

LIDO TROPHY

On another beautiful June day, the annual Mixed Open event was well supported in it's new slot earlier in the season.

The home teams took most of the spoils, with main sponsor of the event, Nancy Morris and partner, Graham Black win everything apart from the kitchen sink.

2nd place to Duncan and Margaret Lauder with 3rd going to Denis Doherty and Lindsay Mitchell.
Mention for the novelty prizes to Graham ,Lindsay and Irene.

Afraid the wooden spoon was won by our Captain and partner, who shall not be named,no fault of the lady, by the Captain's account of the round.

Thanks to all who contributed to a fantastic day which had home baking by the Ladies greens by David Peel and hard work by all the Ladies.

The day was conducted in good spirit and humour and enjoyed by all who took
part.

Monday 17 June 2013

The Shaw Trophy

Last week saw 10 players better their handicap, and leading the way in Round 1 of The Shaw Trophy, was Stan Greer, who paraded round the course in a net score of 58.

Fantastic scoring indeed and closely followed by Robin McDougall, who sat one shot adrift, entering today's 2nd round.

Best gross score from Round 1, was Denis Doherty, with a gross 69.

Our  good weather continues and the excellent condition of the course spells good scores and today we were not disappointed..

Scott Ferguson, refreshed from a weekend away last week, scored superbly and shot gross 65, net 60, keeping up his run of form and winning today's sweep.

With the main prize up for grabs, there were a few contenders, with only 4 shots dividing 7 players.

In third place was Denis Doherty, with a score of 127, only one behind frontrunner, Stan Greer, who in turn was 2 strokes behind winner, Robin McDougall with a great 124 aggregate.

Special mention goes to Dougie Cooper who aced the 13th with a majestic shot.

Pictured below is Club Captain,Bobby and Shaw Trophy Winner,  Robin.

Well done to all and report from Sundays Lido to follow.

June Medal

On a lovely flaming June day, we had over 30 players for the June Medal.

With scoring good, we had 7 players better their handicap, with Stewart Campbell scoring a gross 71 and net 61, just pipping young Craig Emery by one shot and 5 others on 63.

A steady 4 up the last, would have seen Stewart slash his handicap by 5 shots and a mention to the Match and Handicap Secretary.

Trying to keep under the radar a not so nice 6. was posted up the last to have a slight cut.

So well done to all who played and fingers crossed , this spell of good weather will continue.

May Medal

On 27th May, we had 22 competitors for the May medal.

With only person breaking par the CSS was 65 and leading the way with a fantastic 63 was Bobby Turner. A very good front nine had Bobby feeling a bit nervy and he scrambled a back nine to take the Medal by 2 strokes from David Cooper.

Best gross of the day was Scott Ferguson with a 72.

Well done to all taking part in difficult conditions..

Friday 24 May 2013

GEOFF ARDEN TROPHY

Another glorious day at Innellan saw 30 entries for The Geoff Arden Trophy.

This was very closely contested with the winner being decided by the best inward half.

Russell Lees managed to pip Neil Muir with a very steady 62 and scoop 1st place.

Scoring was generally good with the Css being 64.

Best gross of the day, was Denis Doherty, who scored 70.

Lets hope this is summer finally arriving and fingers crossed more happy golfing.

McGillivray Quaich

Another wet and windy weekend lead to the Ladies Comp being postponed on Saturday.

With a little respite on Monday, a total of 15 hardy souls took to the course in search  of dry land. With the bad weather we have had, it was a great effort by the greens staff that the course was playable at all.

Just shows all the effort and investment was well worth it.

In between real heavy showers it was Ronnie Stokes, who had earlier boasted of scoring a 58.

Alas Ronnie, you were only 10 strokes out, but true to your word, you won the competition with a very creditable 68, pipping Duncan Lauder on the best inward half.

As the weather was so bad, a few non returns were posted, and this upped the css to 67, and  reduction only for those who played, but as you can see on the Masterscoreboard  everyone's handicap remains the same.

Fingers crossed weather will improve for all Comps this week, which are The Ladies Texas Scramble on Thursday, and the Geoff Arden Trophy on Monday for the Gents.

THE GREENKEEPERS DAY

After almost a year in exile The Captains Blog is back. I was waiting for some better weather to rear my head and dust the clubs down again.

A misty morning saw 20 players take to the grass on a soggy, wet, overcast day with some super scores being posted by the early starters.

A total of 17 players from local clubs Cowal and Blairmore, added to the Innellan members ,made a fantastic total of 57 players.

57 is a rather ironic number as the event had a variety of players and a new concept at Innellan, men and Ladies playing in the same competition along side each other.

The course held up well considering the torrential rain of the previous days, thanks again to the Greens staff on presenting the course in such adverse weather.

With the greens in such good condition scoring was good with some unbelievable scores being posted.

Scott Ferguson has found the way to play Innellan and has seen his handicap reduce to 5 in the last year.

On Monday, Scott had a wand instead of a putter and like Harry Potter cast some magic on the course, with a winning gross score of 65, net 59 and had it not been for a few wee blips on the way, a new course record could have been under threat.

With that score in The Clubhouse a few entrants might have been dismayed to see such a great score to beat, but beaten it was, by David Cooper, with a superb gross 68 net 57.

An eventful round with two 2s and one being an eagle 2 at the ninth saw David win by 2 strokes from Scott.

Jackie Lauder led the way for the ladies with a gross 81 net 65  to cap a very well supported event by the Cowal clubs.

A big thanks to all house staff for their fantastic efforts on the day with such a good turnout.

Next event up for the Gents is The McGillivray Quaich on Monday 13th  and Ladies is Three clubs and a putter on Thursday 9th May.

Lets hope the weather picks up for these events.
