Club Championship and Greenkeepers Day

On Sunday 19 June saw a poor turnout of only 28 players, for the 1st Round of the Club Championship, incorporating the "Mark Wells Trophy". Maybe the poor weather forecast and heavy rain the previous day accounted for this.

Early starters at 9am did not score too well with only one player playing under his handicap. Robin McDougall hit a very nice 62 to be clubhouse leader until a certain Bruce Lauder also shot a 62, only by having a better inward half did Bruce sneak the sweep money. This means that Bruce and Robin are the leaders in the handicap championship.

In the main event the "Club Championship ", Chris Carson leads with a tidy 67 played under quite wet conditions, overhead and underfoot. In second place, with a 4 shot deficit to make up are Nipper Simpson who played well with a gross of 71 and that man again Bruce Lauder. After that is a gap of another 5 strokes to Andy Wilson. So I suppose, Chris will be like a young Irishman, who lead a major going into the last round, with a few shots in hand. Will he be defensive or will he be like Rory and birdie a few in the front 9 to settle the nerves? Time will tell.

Remember if you are in the top 6 gross scores, you will be required to play in the last 2 groups around 6pm on Monday.

Now on to "The Greenkeepers Day".

Forty players from Innellan and visiting clubs took part in better conditions on Monday, the course having dried out a bit from the day before. There were a number of novelty prizes on offer, ie nearest the hole at the 3rd and longest drive up the 9th amongst other prizes, but the main winners on the day, were Scott Lauffer with a best inward half on the way to a net 60, just beating Davie Cooper on countback.  Gross score of the day went to Chris Carson with a 69.

So well done to all winners.

Many thanks to all who took part and donated prizes for the raffle.

Next week sees the 2nd round of the Club Championship, so look forward to some decent weather and better scores.

Andy
